Flash Flood Warning – Weather Alert for July 19, 2025

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Warning until 9:00 pm tonight. Thunderstorms may produce heavy rain across the area, with flash flooding already occuring. The City’s Department of Public Works crews have been deployed to inspect City roads, mark unsafe roads, and clear debris.

At this time, please avoid any traveling. Don’t forget, when flooded, turn around, don’t drown.

Please report flooded City roads to the City via www.collegeparkmd.gov/tellus.

Some helpful flooding related tips:

  • “Turn Around-Don’t Drown” – it only takes a few inches of water to cause a vehicle to move. If floodwaters rise around your car, abandon the car and move to higher ground if you can do so safely. You and the vehicle can be swept away quickly.
  • Avoid travel. If you must travel, plan for extra travel time as some roads may flood and be temporarily closed.
  • Do not walk through moving water. Six inches of moving water can make you fall. If you have to walk in water, walk where the water is not moving. Use a stick to check the firmness of the ground in front of you.
  • Never attempt to remove a fallen tree from the roadway, especially if there are electrical wires tangled in the branches.
  • Should an intersection loose power and traffic signals become non-operational, treat all approaches of the intersection as a two or four-way stop.
  • Be aware of flood prone areas and avoid those routes.
  • Please don’t litter. Trash clogs storm drain systems and impacts street drainage.
  • Remember State law requires the use of headlights when windshield wipers are being used.
